Gunmen attacked a mining operation in Gero village on Tuesday afternoon, killing five workers. The assault happened around 3 p.m. in Jos South LGA, Plateau State.

Local resident Ritiji Dalyop witnessed the attack unfold. He told our correspondent the miners were working when the armed group suddenly appeared and fired at them without warning.

"Five persons were shot dead by the gunmen," Dalyop said.

Gero village sits between 15 and 20 kilometres from the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies in Kuru. Hours before the mining site attack, gunmen had also targeted NIPSS itself.

Rwang Tengwong, spokesperson for the Berom Youth Moulders-Association, confirmed the incident occurred. He expressed alarm over escalating violence in surrounding communities.

According to the group's statement, the earlier NIPSS attack left three security personnel dead. BYM called for immediate government action to halt further bloodshed and restore peace in the region.

SP Alabo Alfred, police command spokesman, said he hadn't received briefings about the killings yet. He noted that officers from the area hadn't updated him as of press time.

Security challenges continue to plague Jos South communities. Residents remain fearful as attacks persist.
