Delta State Commissioner for Transport, Mr. Onoriode Agofure, has stated that the approval granted by Governor Rt. Hon. Elder Sheriff Oborevwori for the construction of stations to convert fuel-powered vehicles to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) will significantly alleviate the transportation challenges faced by residents of the state.
Agofure explained that the state government is mindful of the hardships citizens endure due to the high cost of transportation. He assured Deltans that measures are being put in place, including the establishment of CNG stations across the three senatorial districts, which are expected to be completed within six to seven months.
He appealed for patience, noting that the government is committed to providing lasting relief to stakeholders in the transport sector.
Speaking on the governor’s achievements over the past year and a half, Agofure highlighted the strides made through the Ministry of Transport. He noted that the government has ensured motorists check their vehicles' roadworthiness at minimal costs through computerized vehicle inspection centres established in Sapele, Asaba, and Warri.
The commissioner also emphasized the administration's commitment to the riverine communities, citing the construction of landing jetties, foreshore walls, and an event hall at the Federal Maritime University in Okerenkoko. He described these projects as vital to enhancing service delivery in the state.
Agofure further noted that the ministry has consistently organized training programs for drivers in the State Civil Service, including health checks such as eye screening, sugar level monitoring, and blood tests to promote their well-being.
The Ministry of Transport has taken proactive steps to maintain orderliness on Delta State roads by providing traffic lights, road signs, and lane markings. Additionally, safety measures for riverine areas have been bolstered with the provision of life jackets for boat operators and passengers, as well as ongoing plans to train boat drivers.
The ministry has also tackled water hyacinths in state waterways to ensure the safety of passengers and goods. It has empowered the Delta State Traffic Management Authority (DESTMA) and Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIOs) with patrol vehicles, uniforms, raincoats, boots, and other essential tools to enhance road safety compliance and efficiency.
Agofure reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to ensuring that all efforts align with Governor Oborevwori’s vision of alleviating transportation challenges and improving the well-being of the people of Delta State.
