Gombe Students with Disabilities Call for Urgent School Renovation Ahead of Rainy Season

Students with disabilities at the Centre for Special Education in Gombe State have called for urgent renovation of their school ahead of the approaching rainy season.

The students made this appeal during a donation event organized by the Muhsal Disabled Support Foundation in collaboration with the Advocacy Centre for Development (AC4D).

During the event, students expressed their concerns about the poor state of the school’s facilities and the challenges they face during the rainy season.

Some students reported that the roofs of their classrooms had been blown off and that they had to combine classes in one room due to the lack of proper infrastructure.

Maryam Garba, a Senior Secondary Three (SS3) student, said that the school had not undergone any renovation in the four years she had been there.

She also mentioned that the poor state of the school made it difficult for students to learn and that they were apprehensive about the approaching rainy season.

Hauwa Dauda, another student, highlighted the need for a face-lift for the school, as the current conditions were not conducive to learning.

She also mentioned the lack of proper toilet facilities and the issue of open defecation due to the absence of roofs in the toilet areas.

Comfort Ephraim, a primary four pupil, emphasized the challenges faced by visually impaired students during the rainy season, as they often have no one to help them find shelter during heavy rains.

Saratu Abdul, a Junior Secondary Student, warned that if urgent repairs were not carried out, the whole roofs of the buildings could be blown off by wind during the rainy season.

The students appealed to the state government and other stakeholders to intervene and help renovate the school’s facilities before the rainy season sets in.

The donation event by the Muhsal Disabled Support Foundation and the Advocacy Centre for Development (AC4D) provided the students with sanitary pads, pants, blankets
