Morocco's inspiring World Cup journey ended Thursday when France clinched a 2-0 quarter-final victory at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. The Atlas Lions carried African hopes into the encounter but couldn't overcome the quality of Didier Deschamps' experienced squad.

Kylian Mbappe bounced back from an earlier penalty miss to lead France's charge. The Real Madrid forward netted once and created another as Les Bleus advanced to the semi-finals.

Mbappe had a golden early chance when Manchester United defender Noussair Mazraoui fouled him in the box. After a lengthy delay, the France captain saw his tame penalty easily saved by Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou.

The setback didn't derail Mbappe for long. In the 60th minute, he curled a stunning effort into the net from the edge of the penalty area to finally crack Morocco's defence.

Ousmane Dembele sealed France's dominance just six minutes later. The Ballon d'Or winner drove at the Morocco backline before firing a low shot that Bounou couldn't keep out despite getting a hand to it.

Mbappe's goal moved him to eight for the tournament, level with Lionel Messi in the Golden Boot race. He currently leads the standings thanks to more assists than the Argentina captain.

Morocco's exit marked the end of Africa's representation in the competition. The Atlas Lions had been widely expected to trouble France after another impressive campaign that saw them become the continent's last surviving team.

Their run proved historic nonetheless. A record nine African nations reached the knockout stages following the expansion to a 48-team World Cup, underlining the continent's growing strength.

Despite the defeat, Morocco's performances have reinforced Africa's reputation as a genuine force in global football. The side demonstrated quality and resilience throughout their tournament run.

France now awaits either Spain or Belgium in the semi-finals. The 2018 world champions remain on course for another final appearance in the 2026 tournament.
