Former NHRC Chairman Chidi Odinkalu Defends Bobrisky Over EFCC Arrest: Abuse of Power or Justified Action?

A recent incident has stirred significant controversy involving a popular figure, Idris Okuneye, better known as Bobrisky, and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Bobrisky, a Nigerian crossdresser, was recently arrested and detained by the operatives of the EFCC over allegations of currency mutilation and abuse of the naira.
The arrest has sparked a debate on social media, with former National Human Rights Commission Chairman, Chidi Odinkalu, coming to Bobrisky’s defense.
Odinkalu criticized the EFCC for what he described as an abuse of power, stating that the power of arrest and prosecution should not be weaponized against individuals the agency dislikes.
Odinkalu’s comments, which were posted on his X account, highlighted the fact that many Nigerians are focusing on Bobrisky’s arrest while ignoring more pressing issues, such as the recent hike in electricity tariffs.
He argued that the real problems facing the country, including corruption in government and the judiciary, as well as security issues, should be the focus of the public and the EFCC.
According to Odinkalu, Bobrisky is not responsible for the poverty and other challenges faced by Nigerians.
Instead, he pointed to issues such as the rigging of elections, the looting of the treasury, and the rise of insurgent groups like Boko Haram and bandits as the real problems the country is facing.
The EFCC had invited Bobrisky for questioning following a video report of him spraying and flaunting wads of new Naira notes at the premiere of the movie ‘Ajakaju’, produced by Nollywood actress Eniola Ajao.
The event took place at the Film One Circle Mall, Lekki, Lagos on March 24, 2024.
The agency later confirmed that Bobrisky had been detained at the Lagos Zonal Command of the EFCC after failing to meet the bail conditions granted to him.
This incident has sparked a broader conversation about the role of the EFCC in Nigeria and the issues surrounding the arrest and detention of individuals for actions that may not be considered serious offenses.
It remains to be seen whether Bobrisky will be charged to court or released, but the debate surrounding his arrest and the broader implications for human rights in Nigeria is likely to continue.
