FCT Teachers' Union Chairman Criticizes Council Chairmen for Neglecting Teachers' Welfare

The Chairman of the FCT wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Abdullahi Mohammed Shafas, has criticized the area council chairmen for their neglect of the welfare of Local Education Authority (LEA) primary school teachers in the territory.

Shafas made these remarks during the 12th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Multipurpose Co-operative Society of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), held at Government Secondary School (GSS), Gwagwalada on Saturday.

According to Shafas, the payment of teachers' salaries has been inconsistent and the council chairmen have been avoiding their responsibilities towards teachers.

He said that the council has refused to have an interface with the union when teachers present their demands.

"The area council chairmen only recognize us when we embark on strike action, that is when they will remember that primary teachers exist.

And part from this, council chairmen were among those that employed the teachers into the system.

And why now running away from their responsibilities?" he questioned.

The Chairman of the Multipurpose Co-operative Society of the FCT NUT, Comrade Mahmud Ameh Enemakwu, also spoke at the event, highlighting the achievements of the society, including the ownership of a 33KVA transformer for stable power supply to improve operational efficiency.

The situation in the FCT highlights the need for better communication and cooperation between the council chairmen and the teachers' union to ensure the welfare of teachers is properly addressed.
