‘Fake News’: FG Dismisses Reports of Coup Plot in Nigeria

The Federal Government of Nigeria has dismissed reports of a coup plot against President Bola Tinubu, calling it “fake news.”

The report, which claimed that the Guards Brigade had been put on high alert due to a coup plot over the prevailing economic hardship, was denied by the Defence Headquarters (DHQ).

The DHQ has stated that it will seek legal redress against the publishers of the report and emphasized that the Guards Brigade has always been on high alert to effectively execute its assigned tasks.

In a statement on Tuesday, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said that the federal government would neither be distracted nor intimidated into abandoning the ongoing reforms.

Idris further stated that the report is the figment of the warped imagination of detractors, whose malicious intent is to destabilize the country and undermine the present administration.

He also mentioned that some individuals have resorted to publishing fake news to erode public trust in the government and sow the seeds of discord in the country.

The government will exercise its rights within the federal republic of Nigeria’s laws to contain rogue actions that could destabilize national security and the nation’s hard-earned democracy.

The public has been advised to refrain from spreading or amplifying the unfounded reports.

This recent development in Nigerian politics has shed light on the importance of fact-checking and the need to be cautious when consuming news from various sources.

As the government continues to address the economic hardship, it is crucial for the public to stay informed and support the ongoing reforms aimed at improving the nation’s welfare.
