Ex-PDP Spokesperson Remanded in Prison Over Alleged Defamation Charges

A Magistrate’s Court in Abakaliki has remanded Chika Nwoba, a former spokesperson of the Peoples Democratic Party ((PDP) in Ebonyi, in the Correctional centre over alleged defamation charges.

The charges include conspiracy, false publication, and defamation.

Nwoba, a social media handler, appeared in court on Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2024, to face a three count charge brought by the Prosecutor, ASP Chinagorom Eze.

The charges stem from an arrest made on Sunday, Feb. 11, following a petition lodged by Mr Oguzor Offia-Nwali, the Commissioner for Commerce and Industry in Ebonyi State.

The prosecutor argued that the offences were bailable, but the opposition argued that the Supreme Court had ruled that the Police officer did not need formal permission to prosecute such matters.

The Magistrate, Mrs. Lilian Ogodo, stated that the court lacked jurisdiction to entertain the matter and referred it to the High Court. The case has been adjourned to March 1, 2024.

In conclusion, the former PDP spokesperson, Chika Nwoba, has been remanded in prison over alleged defamation charges. The case is ongoing, and further developments will be observed as the trial progresses.
