Enugu Traders Under Pressure as Government Enforces Daily ₦200 Tax

In 2023, the state government of Enugu imposed an ₦200 daily tax on traders and hawkers, with options for annual, monthly, or quarterly payments.

However, in 2024, the government has started enforcing this tax, causing distress among the local business owners.

A correspondent from the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that tax collectors have been visiting markets in the capital city, sealing shops of those who have not paid the tax.

Traders have expressed their concerns about the high tax rate and the current economic situation in the country.

Some traders have negotiated with the government to reopen their shops after agreeing to pay the ₦5,500 monthly tax.

However, this payment only covers the period from October to December 2023, and the 2024 tax has not yet been imposed.

The enforcement of the daily ₦200 tax has sparked debates about its impact on the local economy and the welfare of small business owners.

The situation in Enugu highlights the challenges faced by traders in Nigeria and their ability to adapt to changing economic conditions.
