Enugu State Government Partners with IOM to Resettle Returnee Irregular Migrants

In a significant move to address the issue of irregular migration, the Enugu State Government has announced a partnership with the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

The collaboration aims to facilitate the safe return and resettlement of irregular migrants from the state, who have faced various challenges in their attempts to migrate to other countries.

The decision was made public by the Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, during a meeting with a delegation from IOM Nigeria, led by Chief of Mission Laurent De Boeck.

Governor Mbah expressed the government’s commitment to working closely with the IOM to ensure the successful reintegration of returnees into their communities.

According to the IOM, an estimated 350 Enugu indigenes have returned from countries such as Libya and Niger Republic, where they faced numerous hardships as irregular migrants.

The organization has been instrumental in providing support to these individuals, helping them to return home safely and begin the process of rebuilding their lives.

The partnership between the Enugu State Government and the IOM will focus on providing essential services to returnees, including counseling, education, and vocational training.

The state government has also pledged to establish a transit camp where returnees can stay while undergoing counseling and being reintegrated into their communities.

In addition to the resettlement program, Governor Mbah highlighted the state’s radical social programs designed to equip returnees with the skills needed to lead successful and fulfilling lives.

These initiatives will not only benefit returnees but also contribute to the overall development of the state.

The collaboration between the Enugu State Government and the IOM is a positive step towards addressing the issue of irregular migration and ensuring the well-being of those affected by it.

By working together, both parties hope to create a more supportive environment for returnees and help them to build a brighter future in their home state.
