Abandoned baby at IDP Camp, Edo State

Edo IDP Camp plead with mother of abandoned baby to come forth and nurse the baby

By Angela James,

The Management of the Home for the Needy popularly known as the Internally Displaced Persons Camp, IDP, has pleaded with the mother of the baby abandoned at the entrance of the camp to come forward to nurse her baby.

One of the Camp Supervisors, Pastor Evelyn Omigie made this plea while speaking to our Correspondent in Benin on the latest development on the baby that was found at the entrance of the camp.

Pastor Omigie said that the camp will rally support for the upkeep of the baby since the reason she abandoned the baby was because she had no money to take care of the child according to the note she left beside the baby.

Narrating how the baby was discovered lying under one of the mango trees at the entrance of the camp, Pastor Omigie explained that it was one of the students in the school that drew their attention to the baby.

“It was one of our students from the community that saw the baby that alerted his teacher who immediately drew our attention to the innocent baby who was wrapped and kept under one of the mango trees at the entrance to the camp. The Police in our security post immediately phoned their station and before you know it the DPO arrived. So the child was taken to our health care facility in the camp at the instance of the DPO who was eager to save the baby’s life first.

The baby was later taken to the station for proper documentation before he was brought back. And as we speak the baby is hail and healthy. We are calling on the mother of the baby to come forward and breastfeed the child. Since the note she left behind says that the reason she abandoned the baby here was because she had no money to take care of the baby. Please she should come as the management will rally help for her to cater for the child”.

In the event that the mother shows up later in life to lay claim to the child, Pastor Omigie said, ” the child is her own. If she can produce evidence to that effect, the child will be given to her”.

A shop owner opposite the Camp who didn’t want her name in print told our Correspondent that she saw a lady wearing gown and carrying a baby on her shoulders, alighted from a motorbike and walked towards the Camp.

She further stated that after a little while she hurried out of the camp without the baby, a situation which left her wondering what has become of the child.

In the early hours of Friday last week an unknown lady dumped a baby boy suspected to be two days old within the premises of the Home for the Needy in Uhogua, Ovia South West Local Government Area, Edo State.
