The Delta State Government has commenced the construction of a six-lane access road to the proposed Asaba Waterfront City, a landmark project designed to transform the state capital.
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori disclosed this on Tuesday during an inspection of the project, highlighting that the initiative was conceived under the previous administration through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement. While the developers are tasked with reclaiming the land and developing the city, the state government is responsible for constructing the access road.
"Asaba is increasingly attracting property developers from Lagos and the South-East because of its strategic location and hospitable environment," Oborevwori said. "The Asaba Waterfront City project is a PPP arrangement, and our role is to provide access to the area by constructing a six-lane road. Work is progressing well, with 20% of the job completed so far, and we are addressing challenges such as buildings on the right of way by compensating property owners."
Governor Oborevwori assured that funds had been released to the contractors, who pledged to complete the road by July. "I am pleased with the progress so far, and if they maintain this speed, the project will be completed before the year ends," he added.
The governor also inspected other critical projects, including the 4.5km Oko-Amakom to Oko-Obiakpu main alignment road, which is being constructed one meter above the 2012 flood level to serve as a refuge for residents during floods. "This road is vital for the people of Oko, and while the terrain makes it more expensive, it underscores our commitment to enhancing rural development," he noted.
Additionally, Oborevwori visited the Marine Road off Cable Point Road in Asaba, a key route for transporting goods across the River Niger. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving infrastructure in the state capital and pledged to clean up Asaba to enhance its appeal.
The governor also inspected ongoing works on Leo Okonweze and Odozi-Obodo Streets, off Ezenei Avenue in Asaba, urging contractors to expedite the completion of these projects.
Oborevwori concluded by reiterating his administration’s determination to create a more connected and economically vibrant Delta State, stressing that significant progress will be achieved this year.
