Delta sets up commission of inquiry to probe land, security challenges in Ogwashi-Uku

The Delta State Government has established a Commission of Inquiry to investigate ongoing land disputes and security challenges within the Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom. This decision follows concerns raised by the Obi of Ogwashi-Uku and other community members regarding increasing tensions over land ownership and security breaches in the region.

In a statement released on Thursday, October 2, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Kingsley Emu, announced the formation of the 7-member commission, chaired by Hon. Justice E.N. Emudaino. The commission will be officially sworn in on Monday, October 7, 2024, and is tasked with delivering its findings within sixty days.

The commission includes esteemed members such as Dr. (Mrs) Ajoritsedere Josephine Awosika, Dr. (Pharm) Paul Enebeli, Prof. Andrew Onokerhoraye, DCP Charles Dike of the Delta State Police Command, Barr. Moses Namo of the Department of State Services, and Barr. Gabriel Ikemefuna Eze-Owenz from the Ministry of Justice.

In the interim, the Delta State Government has directed the Obi of Ogwashi-Uku to assume direct control over all boundary and satellite communities until the commission completes its investigation. This move temporarily suspends the authority of the Okwabanis (Clan Chiefs) in these areas, transferring their administrative powers to the Obi.

Prince Ifeakanachukwu Emordi, the Palace Secretary to the Obi of Ogwashi-Uku, expressed support for the state government's decision, affirming the Palace's commitment to ensuring compliance. He warned against land grabbing and assured that any individual caught causing unrest would be referred to law enforcement for prosecution.

The commission will also address issues related to the contested Iyase Chieftaincy title, among other contentious matters in the kingdom.

According to the statement from the SSG, the Delta State Security Council had deliberated on numerous security concerns regarding kingship and land disputes in Ogwashi-Uku and neighboring communities. These conflicts have resulted in the loss of lives and property. The newly formed commission is expected to provide unbiased recommendations aimed at fostering lasting peace in the region.

Affected areas include Ibusa, Otulu, Ubulu-Okiti, Okpanam, Olodu, Ewulu, Azagba-Ogwashi, Aboh-Ogwashi, and Olloh-Ogwashi communities. While the Obi of Ogwashi-Uku will continue to handle traditional matters within his jurisdiction, the security of lives and property will remain under the purview of law enforcement agencies.
