Delta State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, has emphasized that the state government does not owe contractors, thanks to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori's commitment to ensuring the timely and high-quality execution of projects.

Speaking during an inspection of ongoing road projects in Sapele, Aniagwu highlighted the Governor’s proactive approach to infrastructure development, which includes prompt payment to contractors. The inspected projects included the Okirighwre-Benin Road, Okirighwre-Amukpe Road, Shell Road Extension, and Hausa Road Extension.

Aniagwu, accompanied by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Sir Festus Ahon, commended property owners along the right of way for their cooperation in facilitating construction. He stressed that the relationship between the government and contractors was based on mutual accountability.

"We are ensuring that contractors are mobilized and paid promptly for the work they are doing,” Aniagwu stated. “Governor Oborevwori has made it clear that we will not owe contractors. As a government, we represent the people of Delta in this partnership, and our expectation is that contractors reciprocate by delivering quality work on schedule.”

The Commissioner noted that regular project inspections were essential to maintaining high engineering standards and ensuring compliance with specifications outlined in the Bill of Engineering Measurement.

"We’ve identified areas where contractors need to make adjustments, including demolishing certain drainage components that did not meet our standards," Aniagwu said. "These corrections are being carried out immediately because we are very particular about ensuring the quantities and specifications are followed, as they directly impact project funding."

Aniagwu further reiterated the administration’s zero-tolerance policy for substandard work. "The Governor has been very clear: no quality will be sacrificed on the altar of friendship. My team and I are fully committed to maintaining the highest engineering standards across all projects."

The Commissioner expressed satisfaction with the speed and quality of work at the various sites, noting that contractors understood the importance of adhering to specifications and timelines.

“On the whole, we are impressed with the progress. Contractors understand that this partnership must work for the benefit of the people of Delta,” Aniagwu remarked.

The inspection underscores the state government’s dedication to ensuring transparency, efficiency, and quality in delivering infrastructure projects that meet the needs of Deltans.
