The Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi Uku, has been forced to close down following incessant attacks on students by hoodlums.
The Rector of the institution, Prof. Emmanuel Achuenu, announced the closure of the institution during the weekend, with students expected to resume academic activities on Monday, February 26.
The Students Union Government (SUG) of the school also issued a statement ordering all students in the hostels to comply with the management’s directive to proceed on a semi-semester break.
Reports from Ogwashi-Uku said most of the hostels outside and inside the campus have been deserted over fears of attacks by hoodlums.
Some students have lost handsets and laptops to the hoodlums, while some female students have been raped.
An eyewitness, Chisom Gladys, narrated how the hoodlums attacked the students, breaking down doors and stealing valuable properties
In one instance, a boy was shot in the leg after the robbers failed to penetrate his body with the first bullet.
The state Commissioner of Police, Abaniwonda Olufemi, has summoned the area commander and the divisional police officer in Ogwashi-Uku over the matter.
The closure of the Delta Polytechnic is a result of the incessant attacks on students by hoodlums, and the management is taking steps to ensure the safety and security of the students when they resume academic activities on February 26.
