Delta Inter-Communal Clash: Okoloba Community Sounds Alarm Over Attacks, Calls for Government Intervention

By Chancel Bomadi Sunday,Tensions escalate between Okoloba and Okuama communities in Delta State as the former raises alarm over purported attacks and stop-and-search operations allegedly orchestrated by the latter. Recent incidents, including confrontations along river routes and alleged threats to fishermen and women, have reignited concerns over a longstanding land dispute.

Chairman of Okoloba community, Mr. Clement Koki, addressing reporters, recounted recent events, stating, “On 20th February, 2024, the people of Okuama conducted stop-and-search operations on market boats returning from Okuagbe Market, targeting Okoloba indigenes. They wielded firearms, threatening boat drivers and searching for community members. These aggressive acts continued the following days, with fishermen and women chased away from their fishing grounds and threats issued against those venturing near our river areas.”

Koki further highlighted encroachments into Okoloba’s forest lands, with alleged takeovers of fishponds and reported plans to intercept teachers traveling to the community. Despite previous government interventions aimed at fostering peace, Okoloba community asserts ongoing hostilities from Okuama, prompting calls for swift government action.

In response to these allegations, an anonymous Okuama community member dismissed the claims as baseless fabrications. However, Okuama community leader, Prof. Okpokpor, pointed fingers at Okoloba, alleging sponsored aggression backed by undisclosed individuals facilitating arms procurement.

With tensions simmering, Okoloba community emphasizes a commitment to peace while asserting readiness for self-defense if pushed beyond tolerance limits. The community urges government intervention to rein in perceived provocations and ensure lasting tranquility in the region.
