CSOs Urge President Tinubu to Halt Shell’s Divestment from SPDC in Niger Delta

A coalition of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Nigeria has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to immediately halt the planned divestment of Shell from the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited (SPDC).

The CSOs, led by the Executive Director of the Civil Society Advocacy Centre (CISLAC), Comrade Auwal Ibrahim Musa, have expressed concerns over the potential environmental and economic implications of Shell’s exit from the region.

According to the CSOs, the divestment could have a devastating impact on the Niger Delta’s fragile ecosystem and the livelihoods of the local communities that depend on the oil and gas sector for their survival.

They argue that Shell’s exit could lead to a lack of accountability and responsibility for the environmental damage caused by oil exploration and production activities in the region.

The CSOs have urged President Tinubu to ensure that Shell addresses all outstanding environmental issues before it is allowed to divest from the SPDC.

They have also called for a comprehensive and transparent process to be put in place to ensure that the interests of the local communities and the environment are protected.

In response to the CSOs’ concerns, President Tinubu has promised to look into the matter and ensure that the rights and interests of the local communities and the environment are protected.

He has also pledged to work closely with the CSOs and other stakeholders to find a mutually acceptable solution to the issue.

The call for President Tinubu to halt Shell’s divestment from the SPDC in the Niger Delta region has sparked a debate on the future of the oil and gas sector in Nigeria.

It remains to be seen how the government will respond to the CSOs’ demands and what impact this will have on the region’s economy and environment.
