Cross River Education Commissioner Vows to Resign over Corruption Allegations

Cross River State’s Commissioner for Education, Stephen Odey, has vowed to resign from his position if he is found guilty of demanding or receiving money from school principals in the state.

He made this declaration while addressing recent achievements of his ministry under Governor Bassey Otu.

Odey emphasized his commitment to ending extortion in schools and promised to sack principals found guilty of such offenses.

He highlighted the wide-ranging reforms undertaken by his ministry, including disciplinary actions against teachers and principals involved in misconduct.

The Commissioner also announced plans to promote teachers and recruit 6,000 new educators, stating that the state has been facing a shortage of teachers.

He assured that incentives are being developed to retain teachers, especially those in rural areas.

Additionally, some teachers who were previously demoted due to inadequate qualifications will be reinstated after upgrading their academic credentials.

Addressing the issue of cultism in schools, Odey mentioned ongoing collaborations with the Department of State Security (DSS) and the Police to combat the problem.

He reported a significant reduction in cult-related activities in schools following his visits to affected areas.
