Cleric and Five Others Sentenced to Death for Armed Robbery in Bank Heists

A court has sentenced a cleric, Evangelist Adewale Adelu, and five others to death by hanging for their involvement in armed robbery at two commercial banks in Akure and Idanre.

The verdict was delivered after the court found them guilty of the charges brought against them.

The armed robbery incidents, which took place on a date, saw the group of six individuals using weapons to steal an undisclosed amount of money from the banks.

The court heard how the gang had meticulously planned the robberies and executed them with precision, leaving bank staff and customers in a state of shock and fear.

During the trial, the prosecution presented evidence that included CCTV footage, witness testimonies, and forensic reports that linked the six defendants to the crime.

The defense argued that their clients were innocent and that the evidence presented was not enough to warrant a conviction. However, the judge, after careful consideration of the evidence and arguments, ruled that the prosecution had proven their case beyond a reasonable doubt.

In delivering the sentence, the judge stated that the court had a duty to protect society from criminals and that the death penalty was appropriate in this case due to the seriousness of the crime.

The defendants were given the opportunity to appeal the sentence, but it remains to be seen if they will take this up.

The sentencing of the cleric and his accomplices has sent shockwaves through the community, with many expressing their surprise at the involvement of a man of the cloth in such a heinous crime.

This case has once again highlighted the issue of crime and the need for justice to be served in Nigeria.
