Cholera outbreak ravages Delta communities, claims three lives, residents cry for help

A devastating cholera outbreak has swept through the Odorubu and Adobu communities in Patani Local Government Area (LGA) of Delta State, leaving a trail of death and hospitalizations.

The crisis, which began suddenly last week, has escalated rapidly, leaving at least three persons death and overwhelming local health efforts, thereby sparking desperate appeals for government assistance.

Community leaders and residents are reeling from the severity of the outbreak. Mr. Gabriel Inikoru, chairman of Odorubu, expressed the collective grief and distress, stating, “The situation here has escalated rapidly. Though officials announced precautions earlier, the outbreak struck suddenly. Before we could fully grasp the severity, reports emerged of deaths in Adobu and hospitalizations.”

Victims of the outbreak include children and entire families struggling to survive. Emiru David’s younger brother, who was preparing for his Primary 6 exams, tragically succumbed to the disease. Similarly, “Emeru Samson’s eldest daughter is currently hospitalized, and Onofawewe’s wife is in critical condition at the General Hospital.” The mounting death toll has left the community in mourning, with uncertainty about how many more lives could be lost.

The crisis has been largely attributed to the lack of access to clean drinking water. With no other viable sources, residents have relied on untreated streams, which has significantly contributed to the rapid spread of the disease. According to Inikoru, “The crisis appears linked to contaminated water. During this dry season, water scarcity forces residents to consume unsafe sources. Dust and poor sanitation exacerbate the issue.”

The situation is further worsened by inadequate hygiene practices, making containment efforts difficult. “Many here lack awareness of proper hygiene practices; even food storage is inadequate due to environmental conditions. Efforts to educate the community are often met with resistance, as locals perceive advice as condescending.”

Despite efforts by local authorities, including a visit by the Vice Chairman and the Health Department Head to distribute medications and promote hygiene measures, the outbreak continues to spiral out of control. Handwashing and basic precautions have proven insufficient, leaving residents feeling abandoned. “Without immediate intervention, the consequences will be catastrophic. The disease progresses rapidly—once symptoms manifest, victims are immobilized. Time is running out.”

Inikoru and other community members are urgently calling on the government and humanitarian organizations to provide immediate relief, including clean water, medical supplies, and public health education. The fate of these communities depends on swift action to prevent further loss of life.
