Canada Revises Post-Graduation Work Permit Rules for International Students

The Canadian government has announced changes to the post-graduation work permit (PGWP) program for international students starting February 15, 2024.

These changes are aimed at addressing the growing demand for skilled workers in various sectors, including construction, and ensuring a balanced approach to immigration.

Under the revised rules, students who have completed a master’s degree program within two years will now be eligible for a three-year PGWP, provided they meet all other qualification criteria.

This extension is expected to provide international students with more time to gain valuable work experience and potentially transition to permanent residency in Canada.

However, from September 1, 2024, foreign students enrolled in curriculum licensing agreement programs will no longer be eligible for PGWP.

This measure is intended to ensure that international students pursue high-quality education and training in Canada.

The extraordinary measures for distance learning and PGWP validity will remain in place until further notice, allowing students to continue benefiting from the flexibility and opportunities offered by these programs.

The PGWP is an open work permit that allows international students to work anywhere in Canada for any employer, for as many hours as they wish.

The duration of the PGWP depends on the level and length of the study program and the expiry date of the student’s passport, whichever comes first.

To be eligible for a PGWP, students must graduate from a designated learning institution (DLI) and demonstrate their intention to stay in Canada temporarily to work.

A DLI is a school approved by Canada’s provincial or territorial government to host international students.

These changes come at a time when Canada is grappling with a housing shortage, partly due to the influx of international students and migrant workers.

In response, the Canadian government has recently implemented a ban on foreign ownership of residential properties.

As Canada continues to attract international students and skilled workers, these revised PGWP rules are expected to contribute to the country’s economic growth and development, particularly in sectors such as construction, where skilled labor is in high demand.

The revised PGWP rules for international students in Canada are designed to strike a balance between attracting skilled workers and addressing the challenges posed by the growing demand for housing.

These changes are expected to have a significant impact on the construction industry and other sectors that rely on skilled workers, making Canada an attractive destination for international students and professionals alike.
