BREAKING: Tinubu suspends CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele over alleged improprieties

By Ovasa Ogaga,

President Bola Tinubu has ordered the immediate suspension of the embattled Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele, from office over alleged financial improprieties

Advocate.ng reports that this is coming in the wake of speculated moves by Emefiele to flee the country in disguise of going to pursue a course abroad.

The suspension, according to the statement released by the Director of Information, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Willie Bassey, the suspension takes immediate effect.

He explained that the suspension of the CBN governor was based on an ongoing investigation as well as planned reforms in the financial sector.

Bassey added that Emefiele has been directed to immediately hand over the affairs of his office to the Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate) pending the conclusion of the investigation and the reforms.

The statement partly read, “President Bola Tinubu has suspended the Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele, from office with immediate effect.

“This is sequel to the ongoing investigation of his office and the planned reforms in the financial sector of the economy.

“Emefiele has been directed to immediately hand over the affairs of his office to the Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate), who will act as the Central Bank Governor pending the conclusion of the investigation and the reforms.”

Emefiele suspension, Advocate.ng further gathered may not be unconnected to the ignoble role allegedly played by the CBN governor in the build-up to the 2023 general elections and the failed Naira redesign policy which plunged the nation into crisis.
