BREAKING: 1985 U-17 Word Cup Winning Coach, Sebastian Broderick, Passes Away at 85

In a heartbreaking turn of events, the world of football mourns the loss of a legendary figure. Sebastian Broderick, the esteemed coach who led Nigeria’s U-17 team to victory in the inaugural U-17 World Cup in 1985, has passed away at the age of 85.

Broderick, who had been battling an ischemic stroke for over a year, was receiving treatment at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital.

The Nigerian coach’s career was nothing short of remarkable. He began as a player for the Onitsha team in the Challenge Cup in 1956 and went on to represent Nigeria at the Mexico Olympic Games in 1968.

In 1972, he famously scored a free kick to win the Challenge Cup for Bendel Insurance.

As a coach, Broderick made history when he led the Nigerian team to victory in the first U-17 World Cup in China in 1985.

He was part of a three-man crew that included Bala Shamaki and Christian Chukwu. In addition, he served as an assistant to Clemens Westerhof in the Super Eagles.
