Birmingham City fired their manager, Wayne Rooney, on Tuesday after a dismal 15-match run.
The 38-year-old ex-Manchester United and England star took charge of the Championship side in October but managed only two wins in 15 games, with Monday’s 3-0 loss to Leeds, their ninth under him, being the last straw.
Birmingham, who have NFL star Tom Brady as a minority shareholder, are in a fight to avoid relegation, dropping to 20th from sixth since Rooney came in.
“The club said in a statement that “results have not matched the expectations that were set from the start, despite their best efforts.
“That’s why the board thinks that a change in management is for the good of the football club.”
Rooney succeeded John Eustace, who was fired just after he had led Birmingham to two consecutive wins that pushed them into the play-off spots.
“Football is a results game, and I admit they have not been at the standard I expected them to be,” said Rooney.
“But time is the most valuable thing a manager needs, and I don’t think 13 weeks was enough to make the changes that were necessary.
