BEDC Blames TCN for Epileptic Electricity Supply in Franchise Area

The Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) has attributed the persistent drop in electricity supply within its franchise area to insufficient load allocation from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).

Acting Managing Director of BEDC, Evelyn Gbiwen, disclosed that the company receives only about 200 to 290 megawatts of electricity daily from the national grid, which is inadequate to serve its customers in Edo, Delta, Ondo, and Ekiti states.

Gbiwen emphasized that the current load allocation cannot even cater to the needs of Benin City alone, let alone the entire franchise area.

She stressed that BEDC requires at least 1,000 megawatts to provide better service to its customers.

The issue of insufficient power supply has been a concern for the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI), with the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, threatening to revoke the license of non-performing and erring discos.

Despite the challenges, BEDC has been trying to distribute the limited power to areas with high-demand businesses such as nightclubs and hotels.

However, the company’s efforts have been hampered by the insufficient allocation from the national grid.

The current situation highlights the need for the Nigerian government to address the challenges faced by power distribution companies and the NESI as a whole.

This will not only improve the quality of life for millions of Nigerians but also create a conducive environment for businesses to thrive.
