Balkanization of DELSU: Must Sheriff Join the Bandwagon?

We hear Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has directed the movement of some courses of the Delta State University of Science and Technology, Ozoro to Orerokpe, stirring speculation that the Governor might be at loggerhead with his ‘godfather’, Sen Ifeanyi Okowa.

 

Disagreements between politicians are bound to happen. After all, Okowa disagreed with his former boss, James Ibori, on preferred PDP Delta governorship candidate. It is happening between Governor Sim Fubara of Rivers state and his godfather, Nyesom Wike.

 

Governor Obaseki of Edo state, disagreed with his mentor Adams Oshiomhole. Ambode disagreed with Tinubu.

 

My focus is not their loggerheads which is bound to happen. It is too petty to discuss Sheriff loggerheads with his mentor Okowa. It is one of the games of Nigerian politics. If it is true as speculated then it was not done wisely.

 

One would have expected Sheriff to establish a full-fledged higher institution like school of nursing in Orerokpe or college of education or polytechnic in Orerokpe.

 

Sheriff should have moved the faculty of engineering and faculty of Law to Abraka since a University has been established in Ozoro. And it is expected of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to make the one at Ozoro a full-fledged University.

 

The fragmentation of faculties and departments spreading round every corner can’t produce qualitative education.

 

Let Abraka be a full-fledged University with all necessary faculties and departments moved to Abraka. Sheriff lacks advisers/aides and commissioners that have the capacity to advise him on development.

 

Sheriff needs knowledgeable aides and not just being politicians with accumulation of exaggerated profiles and qualifications that lack knowledge and wisdom.

 

A faculty of engineering covers all engineering courses whether marine or mechanical. A law faculty covers all branches of laws. Sheriff should relocate the Oghara Teaching Hospital to Eku or Abraka or Warri and make Oghara a referral specialist medical centre.

 

African and Nigerian leaders going for medical checks/treatment to UK, US, France, Germany, we hear they do attend specialist hospitals and not teaching hospitals for checks and treatments. None of Buhari medical trips to UK were in teaching hospitals.

 

In Nigeria teaching hospitals are the only best medical facilities. It is not so in Europe and North America.  Sheriff should move Oghara teaching hospital to Abraka or Eku or Warri.

 

Sheriff could also build a specialist referral hospital in Orerokpe. It must not be only teaching hospitals to receive best medical treatments and checks.

 

Nigeria needs to grow from this narrow view of thinking that only teaching hospitals have the best medical facilities and specialists.

 

Gov Sheriff should update himself on good governance because the Federal allocation if properly used can do alot for Delta.
