ASUU Sokoto Urges Government to Reconstitute University Governing Council and Settle Outstanding Allowances

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Sokoto State University (SSU) has called on the Sokoto State Government to reconstitute the university’s governing council, which was dissolved nine months ago.
The absence of a governing council has left the institution without a body to make crucial decisions, such as staff recruitment, financial matters, and student admissions.
The union has also urged the government to settle the outstanding Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) owed to its members, accumulated over the last five academic sessions.
In a statement signed by the ASUU-SSU branch Chairman and Secretary, Sa’idu Isah and Abubakar Aliyu, the union highlighted the importance of a governing council in the university’s operations.
The absence of a council violates the Universities Act (Miscellaneous Act 2003) and the Sokoto State University Law 2009.
ASUU-SSU has also requested the Sokoto State Government to address several other issues, including the implementation of a salary increment approved by the Presidential Committee on Salaries.
The committee has approved a 35% salary increase for professors and a 25% increase for other staff, effective January 2023.
The union has also urged the state government to implement the ₦35,000 wage award that was previously implemented by the federal government following the removal of fuel subsidy.
The union also called on the state government to complete the university staff quarters project, which has been abandoned for about 11 years.
The completion of the project would enhance campus security and alleviate transportation and accommodation challenges faced by ASUU members.
In their statement, the union emphasized the need for the state government to address these demands to ensure the efficient operation of the university and the well-being of its members.
The union’s call for action underscores the importance of government support in maintaining the quality of education and the welfare of university staff in Nigeria.
