Abia State Legislature Passes Bill for Affordable and Quality Medicine for Citizens

The Abia State House of Assembly has passed into law the “Abia State Medicine and Health Commodities Management Agency Bill, 2024.”
Sponsored by the majority leader and member representing Arochukwu constituency, Mr Okoro Uchenna Kalu, this legislation seeks to ensure the regular availability of quality medicines and health commodities at affordable costs, while also strengthening the local manufacturing units for the production of medicine.
The bill, which was passed during a recent legislative session, was acknowledged by Speaker Emmanuel Emeruwa, who emphasized the importance of the law coming into force on April 4, 2024.
This new legislation is expected to have a considerable impact on the state’s healthcare system by addressing the challenges faced by citizens in accessing essential medicines and health commodities.
In addition to the passage of the Medicine and Health Commodities Management Agency Bill, the Abia State House of Assembly also entertained a petition brought before it by the member representing Ohafia South State Constituency, Mr. Kalu Mba Nwoke.
The petition, titled “The Nefarious Acts of Mr Nmecha Ume, the President-General of Okon-Aku Development Union in Vandalizing Machinery at the Eastern Region Estate Investment Palm Settlement, Okon – Aku Ohafia,” highlighted the need for a thorough investigation into the alleged vandalization of iron rods from the palm settlement.
Mr. Nwoke appealed for the reactivation of the Eastern Region Estate Investment Palm Settlement to create employment opportunities for his constituents and urged the Assembly to ensure the prosecution of those involved in the alleged act.
This petition underscores the importance of addressing corruption and illegal activities that can undermine the state’s economic development and the well-being of its citizens.
As Abia State takes a significant step towards improving its healthcare infrastructure, the passage of the Medicine and Health Commodities Management Agency Bill demonstrates the commitment of the state’s legislature to the welfare of its citizens.
With the implementation of this law, Abia State is poised to set a positive example for other states in Nigeria in terms of healthcare accessibility and affordability.
