Inspector-General of Police Tunji Rilwan Disu has promised swift rescue of pupils and teachers abducted in Oyo State's Oriire Local Government Area. He vowed they would return home unharmed.
Disu made the pledge during a meeting with the Crime Correspondents Association of Nigeria (CCAN). The association's leadership included President Festus Fifen and Secretary Peter Ireh.
The IGP said authorities would use all lawful means to free the victims. He also committed to strengthening internal security nationwide.
Last month, terrorists hiding in bushes abducted schoolchildren aged between 2 and 14 years in both Oyo and Borno States. The abductions sent shockwaves across the country.
CCAN released a statement on Sunday welcoming the IGP's assurance. The association said the pledge has restored hope to worried families.
"At a moment of national anxiety over the fate of the abducted Oyo schoolchildren, the IG's assurance that they will be rescued unhurt reflects confidence in the operational capabilities of the Nigeria Police Force," CCAN noted.
According to the association, Disu's confidence demonstrates an intelligence-driven policing approach. This strategy has produced real wins against kidnapping, banditry, and terrorism.
CCAN praised recent police successes across multiple crime categories. Armed robbery, cultism, and other violent crimes have declined under current leadership.
The association highlighted rescue operations as proof of the new approach. Police freed Adeola Adelabu, her sister, and their children in one such operation.
CCAN also noted the dismantling of several criminal networks nationwide. Enhanced security operations have expanded to all corners of the country.
The association credited Disu's leadership for transforming Nigeria's police force. A renewed sense of purpose now drives officers in their daily work.
Public trust in law enforcement is gradually improving, CCAN said. Nigerians are noticing the impact of focused, strategic policing.
Intelligence-led operations have become the foundation of current police strategy. Public engagement efforts complement these tactical improvements.
CCAN commended the IGP for his handling of high-profile criminal cases. The force has demonstrated it can be firm yet professional and respectful of citizens' rights.
The association's statement reflects growing confidence in the police's ability to handle major security challenges. Many Nigerians are watching closely as operations unfold in coming weeks.
