The people of Abavo Kingdom, in Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State, have begun their annual New Yam Festival, a time-honored celebration marking a bountiful harvest.
In keeping with the customs and traditions of the kingdom, the Obi of Abavo, His Royal Majesty, King Uche Irenuma, officially announced the commencement of the festival. According to a statement issued by the palace and signed by the Chief of Staff, Chief Yusuf Odige, the grand finale of the festival will take place on October 6, 2024.
The statement highlighted the significance of the festival as an opportunity for the people of Abavo to come together as one community to celebrate the year's successful harvest. "His Majesty encourages all the good people of Abavo to use this moment to foster unity and celebrate the abundant harvest of the year," the statement read.
The palace also urged the people to remain law-abiding and to continue supporting the policies of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori in his efforts to propel the state to greater heights. In addition, the traditional ruler called on the state government to address the deteriorating condition of the Umutu-Abavo-Agbor stretch of the Warri-Uromi-Abuja Federal Highway, which he said has harmed the local economy and increased insecurity in the area. The Obi urged the contractor to return to the site and complete the rehabilitation work.
As part of this year's celebration, King Irenuma announced the planting of 100 trees within the newly designated "Green Zone" at the historic Abavo Forest and Wildlife Reserve (Ogbe-enya-Nze). This initiative aims to combat the environmental challenges facing the kingdom and contribute to the global fight against climate change.
The monarch also called on his people to support the work of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) involved in environmental conservation efforts within the region.
Finally, His Majesty urged the people of Abavo to use the festival as an opportunity to reconnect with family, friends, and neighbors, fostering oneness and strengthening communal bonds.
