From the Zamfara State House of Assembly, a lawmaker has clarified that the Speaker, Bilyaminu Moriki, has not been impeached but is under suspension.
This comes amidst widespread speculation about the Speaker’s status within the legislative body.
Shamsudeen Bosko, representing the Talata Mafara constituency, explained that the House’s standing rules allow the appointment of a Speaker Pro-Tempo to preside over sessions in the Speaker’s absence during a crisis.
The crisis in question arose from a motion moved by Nasiru Abdullahi, highlighting the resurgence of insecurity in the state.
Eighteen members of the Assembly, who currently possess the mace, a symbol of the Assembly’s authority, initiated the suspension, prompting the election of Bashar Gummi from the Gummi Constituency as the Speaker Pro-Tempo.
As the situation remains uncertain, the future of Speaker Moriki and the resolution of the crisis depend on the outcome of forthcoming Assembly sittings.
The Zamfara State House of Assembly, composed of twenty-four elected members, now faces a critical juncture as it navigates this internal conflict amidst broader security concerns in the state.
