Yemi Alade, the Nigerian Afropop Sensation, Turns 35 Today!

Today marks the 35th birthday of Yemi Alade, the Nigerian Afropop sensation known for her incredible talent as a singer, songwriter, actress, and activist.

Born on March 13, 1989, Yemi has come a long way from winning the Peak Talent Show in 2009 to becoming one of the biggest artists in Africa.

After her victory in the talent show, Yemi signed with Effyzzie Music Group and gained massive recognition with her hit single “Johnny” in 2014.

Since then, she has released two successful albums, King of Queens and Mama Africa, both of which have garnered huge commercial success.

Yemi’s music has reached audiences across the African continent and the world, earning her numerous accolades and recognition.

Yemi Alade has won the MTV African Music Awards for Best Female in 2015 and 2016 consecutively and was nominated for Artiste of the Year in 2015.

She was the first female to win the MAMAs for Best Female consecutively twice and was also the first African female to be nominated for the MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs).

Yemi has been nominated for the BET Awards for Best International Act: Africa in 2015 and 2016.

Aside from her musical achievements, Yemi is also known for her captivating stage performances, fashion sense, and music videos.

She has won The Headies Award for Best Performer twice, in 2018 and 2019, making her the first artiste to win the category.

Yemi is fluent in English, Igbo, Pidgin, Yoruba, French, Swahili, and Portuguese, which allows her to connect with diverse audiences.

Yemi Alade’s multi-ethnic background, with her father being a Yoruba police commissioner and her mother an Igbo native, has greatly influenced her music and artistry.

In 2020, she was part of The Global Goal: Unite for our future, a concert sponsored by Global Citizen aimed at highlighting the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in remote areas of Africa and the world.
