The quest by Delta Central people to produce the Delta state governor come 2023 now hangs in balance, as Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has said that his electoral campaign promise to Urhobos as his successor was his personal opinion.

Delta State Governor, Senator (Dr) Ifeanyi Okowa, during the Governor’s 2019 Quarterly Media Interaction with Journalist in Asaba

Governor Okowa stated this during the quarterly press briefing at Government House, Asaba, Tuesday, while responding to question on his position on the Peoples Democratic Party power rotation agreement in the state, which he also campaigned with in the build up to 2019 elections.

It would be recalled that Urhobos PDP leaders under the leadership of Chief James Ibori have held several meetings to fine tone strategies on how to persuade Delta South and North to support the Delta Central quest to produce the next state governor after Okowa’s tenure in 2023.

Governor Okowa explained that he does not have the capacity as an individual to determine who becomes the next governor, noting when it’s time the party  leadership  will  collectively decide  who  becomes the governor.

According to him, “I can have my personal view but I cannot enforce anyone as governor as it’s only God that knows who will become governor. So, I don’t know who will succeed me, it’s only God that knows who will succeed me.

“I have the right to give my personal advice and my personal thought based on the rotational principle in the state but when we get to that bridge, we will cross it.

“The proper thing is that we want to be sure that there is unity and equity in the state and we will continue to work with the mission that keeps us united as a people and Deltans.”

He also added that no one make someone a governor singlehandedly, but a collective efforts of all major stakeholders.

Meanwhile, former minister for State Education, Chief Kenneth Gbagi has started consultations ahead of the 2023 governorship election, saying that he is most suitable person to consolidate on the development stride of the Okowa-led administration.
