The University of Delta, Agbor (UNIDEL), graduated 30 First-Class students at its maiden convocation on Saturday, as Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori announced major incentives, including cash rewards and approval for a university teaching hospital.

At the ceremony, the governor disclosed that the Best Graduating Student would receive a ₦5 million award, while each First-Class graduate would be paid ₦500,000 immediately. He also approved the conversion of the Mother and Child Hospital, General Hospital Agbor, and Diagnostic Centre, Owa-Alero, into a University Teaching Hospital to support accreditation of UNIDEL’s medical programmes. A coaster bus and a hostel block were additionally pledged.

Describing the event as a watershed, Oborevwori said the university’s establishment — once criticised — has been vindicated by rising enrolment and socio-economic impact. He noted that Delta State now hosts over 100,000 students across its tertiary institutions, stimulating commerce and job creation. The governor paid tribute to his predecessor, Ifeanyi Okowa, for the vision behind UNIDEL’s creation.

Vice-Chancellor Stella Chiemeke revealed that 1,606 graduates were presented across the 2023/2024 and 2024/2025 sessions, with certificates and transcripts issued on convocation day. She highlighted full programme accreditation, international partnerships, infrastructure upgrades, and UNIDEL’s sustainability ranking and global recognition. The overall Best Graduating Student, Victoria Uzoma, achieved a GPA of 4.97.

The governor was formally decorated as Visitor to the University and honoured alongside 17 distinguished Nigerians, including Jim Ovia and other national figures.
