Thomas Tuchel has explained why Cole Palmer missed out on England's 2026 World Cup squad. Three players outperformed the Chelsea star in his position, the England manager revealed.
Jude Bellingham, Eberechi Eze, and Morgan Rogers all had stronger seasons than Palmer. They all compete in the right half-10 position that Tuchel preferred to fill with them instead.
Palmer wasn't as decisive as he'd been before, Tuchel noted. Injuries also limited his availability for the Three Lions, he added.
According to the England boss, those three players impressed more during his camps. He made the decision based on current form and consistency at the highest level.
Palmer, 24, will have chances to earn a recall before the tournament starts next month. Tuchel left the door open for future selections if circumstances change.
Fabrizio Romano quoted the manager's explanation on social media. Tuchel's comments offered clarity on a decision that surprised many observers.
