The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria has launched investigations into tour operators accused of smuggling extra pilgrims into this year's Hajj exercise in Saudi Arabia. NAHCON says these same operators also exploited pilgrims under their supervision.
Ismail Abba Yusuf, NAHCON's chairman, ordered the Central Security Committee to identify guilty operators and probe what happened. He wants a thorough examination of the violations.
Operators found culpable face tough penalties. Operating licenses could be revoked, NAHCON warned.
The investigation forms part of efforts to enforce Hajj guidelines strictly and safeguard Nigerian pilgrims' welfare in the holy land. Saudi authorities have ramped up monitoring of pilgrim movements, housing, and welfare during peak Hajj season.
In another development, NAHCON reaffirmed its commitment to food safety after rejecting meals served on May 27. Saudi health standards weren't met during handling and packaging.
NAHCON pulled the meals immediately in collaboration with Saudi health officials. Pilgrims received alternative light refreshments instead.
The commission has begun processing refunds for affected pilgrims. Officials assured everyone of continued welfare support throughout the pilgrimage.
