President Bola Tinubu has honoured Nobel laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka as the playwright marked his 92nd birthday, hailing him as a rare talent whose work in literature, democracy and governance has shaped Nigeria and the world.

In a tribute released on Sunday ahead of Soyinka's Monday birthday, Tinubu stressed that such towering figures emerge only once in a generation.

"Exceptional individuals like Professor Soyinka do not come often in a generation. He is one of those who illuminate the path for humanity, challenge convention and refuse to remain silent in the face of oppression and injustice," the President said.

Tinubu praised Soyinka's output as a playwright, novelist, poet and essayist, alongside his advocacy for good governance. He noted that Soyinka became the first African to claim the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1986, a recognition that followed numerous other international honours celebrating his literary and social impact.

The President also acknowledged Soyinka's defiant stance against military rule and his participation in the June 12 pro-democracy struggle. "I also recall Professor Soyinka's courageous struggle against military dictatorship over the years and his efforts during the June 12 struggle, for which we were both in the trenches," he added.

Tinubu cast Soyinka as one of Nigeria's most vital national treasures, whose ongoing wisdom and commitment to national development continue to motivate citizens across the country. "Today, I salute one of our nation's living repositories of history, knowledge and courage.

That he is with us is a gift we will always treasure," the President noted.

He went on to thank Soyinka for his steadfast belief in Nigeria and his valuable guidance. "I thank him for his unwavering faith in the Nigerian project and his wise counsel," Tinubu said.

The President highlighted how Soyinka's legacy has shaped writers, scholars and activists globally through his influence and example. "As he marks this birthday, I join the world in celebrating his profound influence on generations of writers, scholars and activists, as well as his sacrifices for our nation," he said.

Tinubu closed with warm wishes for the celebrated author's health and longevity. "I wish 'Kongi' many more years in excellent health," he concluded, using the affectionate reference to Soyinka's artistic persona.
