President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the transformation of the Institute of Petroleum Studies in Kaduna into a full university. He announced the decision during his Democracy Day speech on June 12.
The new institution will be named after General Shehu Musa Yar'Adua. It will focus on geological sciences and engineering technology.
Tinubu said the naming honours the late general's role in Nigeria's democratic development. Yar'Adua served as Chief of Staff at the Supreme Headquarters.
"Among the architects of modern democratic Nigeria, we honour General Shehu Musa Yar'Adua for his vision of national partnership," Tinubu said. He credited the former military leader with shaping the country's democratic journey.
Beyond the university approval, the president used Democracy Day to celebrate pro-democracy activists. National honours were conferred on several individuals who fought for democratic restoration.
Tinubu noted that these recognitions celebrate the bravery and sacrifice of democracy fighters. He called on Nigerians to stay united in strengthening democratic institutions.
The president urged the nation toward prosperity and development through committed democratic participation. He emphasized the importance of solidarity among citizens.
Officials say the university will offer specialised training in petroleum, geology and engineering fields. It's expected to expand access to advanced tertiary education across the country.
The institution should strengthen Nigeria's capacity in energy and geosciences sectors. This aligns with national development priorities in resource management.
Details on funding and academic operations will come from the Federal Ministry of Education. Appointments for pioneer management staff haven't yet been announced.
