Thomas Tuchel believes England desperately needs Bukayo Saka for Saturday's World Cup clash against Panama. The manager made the admission as the Three Lions prepare for their final Group L match at MetLife Stadium.
Saka has been sidelined with an Achilles injury but is making steady progress in training. Tuchel indicated the winger could feature in the upcoming fixture.
"He's getting there," Tuchel told reporters on Wednesday at his press conference. "Two more sessions and he'll be ready for Panama."
Noni Madueke has occupied the right flank in both of England's matches so far. But Saka's return would offer a different option for the manager's tactical approach.
Tuchel stressed he isn't putting all the burden on Saka's shoulders. "He's a top player, that's why he's here," the manager said.
England drew goalless with Ghana in their second fixture of the tournament. That uninspiring result left many supporters calling for changes to the starting eleven.
Critics questioned England's attacking approach during the Ghana encounter. The side dominated possession without ever truly threatening between the posts.
Tuchel defended his team's performance in the match. He acknowledged the display wasn't entertaining but insisted his approach was tactically sound.
"No one has won a World Cup playing four goals per match," he noted. "Our job is to bring everything we can to the table."
According to Tuchel, managing a World Cup campaign requires more than flashy attacking football. Defensive discipline and controlled play matter just as much.
"I know it's not exciting," he added with candour. "But it takes two to tango out there."
England sits in Group L needing a solid result against Panama to advance. Victory would also put them in position to potentially top their group.
The match represents a crucial moment in the Three Lions' tournament journey. Missing out on the Round of 32 simply isn't an option for the English squad.
