Rivers United players and staff narrowly escaped serious harm in a road accident on Thursday. The NPFL club's team bus crashed while heading to Awka for a crucial cup match.

The incident happened along Obiri-Ikwerre Airport Road near Port Harcourt around midday. The squad was travelling to face Nasarawa United in the President's Cup Round of 16.

Club officials confirmed no deaths resulted from the crash. They also ruled out any life-threatening injuries among those on board.

Several players and coaching staff members sustained minor injuries in the collision. Medical personnel are currently treating all affected individuals, the club stated.

"The safety, health and well-being of our players and officials remain our utmost priority," Rivers United said in a statement. According to the club, everyone hurt in the accident is now in stable condition.

Doctors continue to monitor the injured team members closely. All affected persons are receiving appropriate medical care.

In response to the crash, Rivers United is reassessing how it transports teams. Officials want to prevent similar incidents from occurring again in future.

The club's Sunday fixture against Nasarawa United remains scheduled for Awka City Stadium. Preparations for that match are still underway despite the accident.

Rivers United thanked supporters for their prayers and concern following the incident. Partners and the broader football community also showed their solidarity with the club.
