The Democratic Leadership Alliance has strongly condemned the revocation of bail granted to activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore. The party warned that his imprisonment threatens democratic freedoms and shrinks space for dissent across Nigeria.

Samuel M. Memeh, national chairman of the DLA, signed the statement on Monday.

He expressed "profound concern" over the court's recent decision affecting Sowore.

The alliance respects the judiciary's constitutional role, Memeh noted. Yet the party fundamentally disagrees with the decision that led to Sowore's imprisonment.

According to the statement, the case raises serious questions about proportionality and democratic tolerance. It comes at a time when Nigeria faces worsening insecurity and economic hardship.

Why imprison a vocal opposition leader over political speech? The DLA finds this difficult to justify when kidnappings, banditry and terrorism plague the nation.

Economic hardship deepens daily. Citizens struggle with poverty while critical voices face imprisonment.

The party warned that revoking Sowore's bail will fuel public fears about shrinking democratic space. Citizens will increasingly worry about their right to dissent and criticize government.

Democratic governance demands protecting citizens' rights to question authority and challenge policies. Accountability requires that leaders face scrutiny from the public.

Whether Nigerians agree with Sowore's views or not, democracy still protects his right to speak. Silencing critics undermines the foundations of democratic rule.

The DLA offered a clear message to authorities: suppression isn't the answer. Better governance, greater accountability and improved service delivery should address criticism instead.

The alliance called on the judiciary to uphold fairness and impartiality. Constitutional democracy depends on protecting unpopular voices, not imprisoning them.

Memeh urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Attorney-General of the Federation to show greater tolerance. Dissenting opinions must be permitted in any functioning democracy.

Nigeria's security crisis demands a comprehensive approach, the DLA argued. Effective security operations alone won't solve the problem without economic development.

Job creation must accompany security efforts, the statement emphasized. Intelligence gathering and anti-corruption work are equally crucial to national stability.

Social investment in communities offers another key solution. Without addressing poverty and hopelessness, security gains won't last.
