Nigeria's First Lady, Remi Tinubu, has urged all Nigerians to register for a National Identity Number, stressing that accurate population data underpins effective planning and better service delivery across the country.
In remarks marking this year's World Population Day, Senator Tinubu emphasised that Nigeria's expanding population makes reliable demographic records crucial for government decision-making. She said: "I encourage every Nigerian to register and obtain a National Identity Number (NIN), if they have not done so."
The First Lady pointed out that solid population data allows the government to plan strategically and deliver essential services to its citizens. According to her, "Accurate population data will enable the government to plan effectively and provide essential services for Nigeria's growing population."
Tinubu also highlighted the importance of investing in people, particularly women and young people, whom she described as essential to Nigeria's progress. She stressed that quality healthcare, education and economic opportunities must remain priorities for citizens to thrive.
"Today I join the global community in support of our commitment to building a future where every individual, especially women and young people, have access to quality healthcare, education and opportunities to reach their full potential," she told reporters.
The First Lady framed rapid population growth not as a burden but as an opportunity demanding improved planning and shared responsibility. She called on both government and citizens to work together to strengthen national development and family wellbeing.
"Through collective action, we can empower families, promote healthy lives, support our youth and ensure sustainable development for generations to come," Tinubu added.
Her message comes as Nigeria continues efforts to strengthen its national identity and population management systems, with registration campaigns ongoing across states.
