Lagos State Police Command has arrested a suspect over the rape and murder of a point of sale operator whose body was found in a canal at Sangotedo-Ajah. Officers responded quickly after receiving a distress call that led to the grim discovery.
Police spokesman SP Abimbola Adebisi told reporters that the command received information on July 14, 2026, around 11:45 a.m. that the suspect had killed the woman and was trying to dump her body in a canal along Monastery Road, Mopo, Ajah.
The divisional police officer rushed to the scene with a team of operatives. Security guards in the area had already caught the suspect, who was then taken into police custody.
The victim, a young woman running a POS business, suffered a brutal sexual assault before her death. Her body was recovered from the canal near the Shoprite complex in Sangotedo.
Officers transported the remains to the General Hospital Mortuary in Yaba for preservation and autopsy. Adebisi confirmed the suspect remains in custody while investigators work the case.
The matter has now been handed to the State Criminal Investigation Department at Yaba for deeper probe. According to the police spokesman, the commissioner has ordered a thorough and careful investigation.
CP Tijani Fatai, the Lagos State commissioner of police, pledged that no effort would be spared in pursuing justice. "No stone will be left unturned in ensuring that justice is served," Adebisi said, relaying the commissioner's commitment to the investigation.
