Police caution against plan to cause unrest in Kano over A/Court verdict

The Kano State Police Command has issued a stern warning to any party supporters who are planning to cause chaos in the state after the Appeal Court ruled on the state governorship dispute.

The warning was delivered by the Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Usaini Gumel, through the Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa. He said that anyone who tries to disturb the peace in the state will face the law and its consequences.

He said that the Command had reliable information that some groups of political party supporters were using unconventional media platforms to mobilise people and plan to protest on the streets against the Kano State Governorship Appeal Court’s verdict that was announced on Friday, November 17, 2023.

“The information showed that the protesters want to paralyse the state in an action that may likely lead to violence.

“Also, you will remember that before the court ruling, the leaders of both the NNPP and APC were invited by the Kano State Police Command, where they signed a peace accord on Thursday, November 16, 2023.”

He added that the aim of the peace accord was to maintain harmony and ensure that the political situation in Kano State was peaceful, no matter the outcome of the judgement.

“Moreover, the leaders of the two political parties agreed that they would not allow any groups of people with political motives to gather anywhere for any reason, and their supporters would not take part in any mass action that shows preparation for violent processions, protests, or celebrations that may provoke reactions or careless statements from their members that may increase political tension or compromise the security arrangements and respect for the judiciary,” he added.

The Commissioner of Police urged all residents to remain calm and avoid any form of illegal gathering, protest, or procession that may spark violence.
