‘No More Big 3’: Rema Declares New Era in Afrobeats, Sparks Controversy

In a bold move that has set the Nigerian music industry ablaze, Nigerian Afrobeats superstar, Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, has declared the end of the era of the ‘Big 3’ in Afrobeats, asserting his position among the top tier of the genre.
On Saturday, April 28, 2024, Rema took to his X (formerly known as Twitter) account to express his thoughts in a series of tweets that have since stirred a massive reaction from fans and industry insiders alike.
Rema’s declaration came as a direct challenge to the established order of the Nigerian music industry, where Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Davido have long been considered the ‘Big 3’ due to their immense impact and influence both within Nigeria and internationally.
In one of his tweets, Rema boldly stated, “No more Big 3 there’s now a Big 4,” indicating his belief that he has joined the ranks of these iconic artists, and suggesting that there is now a new era in Afrobeats.
This statement was met with both support and skepticism from fans and industry observers.
Some praised Rema for his self-confidence and acknowledged his contributions to the Afrobeats scene, while others questioned whether he had truly earned a place among the top tier of Nigerian artists.
In addition to this, Rema also used his Twitter rant to throw shade at some of his colleagues.
He criticized the recent trend among some artists to distance themselves from the Afrobeats genre, tweeting, “Afrobeat >> AfroAnything,” in a clear reference to the controversy over Wizkid, Burna Boy, and Fireboy’s recent claims that their music isn’t Afrobeats.
Furthermore, Rema accused some record labels of trying to “clone” him, urging them to be more creative and original in their approach to artist development.
Rema’s Twitter rant has ignited a fierce debate within the Nigerian music industry, with fans and critics alike taking to social media to express their opinions on the matter.
As the dust settles, one thing is clear: Rema’s bold declaration has shaken the foundations of the Nigerian music industry and set the stage for what promises to be a new era in Afrobeats.
