The Independent National Electoral Commission has registered 2,333,233 voters for the Osun State governorship election scheduled for August 15. Mrs Oluwatoyin Babalola, the Osun State Resident Electoral Commissioner, made this announcement on Thursday during the distribution of electronic voter registers to political parties at the commission's office in Osogbo.
Babalola said the exercise aligns with the Electoral Act and aims to guarantee transparency, inclusiveness, and credibility throughout the electoral process. She noted that the commission is bound by Section 20 of the Electoral Act 2026 to compile, maintain, update, and provide access to the Register of Voters.
The Electoral Act 2026 requires INEC to supply copies of the voter register to political parties in both printed and electronic formats no later than 30 days before a general election or 14 days before an off-cycle governorship election, according to Babalola. She stressed that this legal requirement demonstrates the commission's dedication to openness and accountability in managing elections.
The electronic register will allow political parties to examine the list of eligible voters across Osun State before the election. Babalola added that this opportunity enables parties to plan campaigns effectively, engage voters lawfully and meaningfully, and foster a more transparent and inclusive electoral process.
Data from the register reveals that Osogbo local government has the highest number of registered voters at 167,704, followed by Ife-East with 128,515 and Olorunda with 123,063. Ife-Central recorded 122,454 voters; Iwo has 106,814; Ede-North has 96,644; Irewole and Ifelodun have 96,528 and 94,870 respectively.
Ilesa-East and Ilesa-West recorded 89,491 and 86,699 voters respectively, while Oriade has 84,238. Odo-Otin and Boripe local governments have 82,574 and 81,067 voters respectively.
Ifedayo, Boluwaduro, and Atakumosa-West local governments have the lowest voter registrations at 28,361, 29,797, and 44,076 respectively. The data demonstrates significant variation in voter distribution across the state's 30 local governments.
