Oredo LG boss flags-off meningitis vaccination

The Executive Chairman, Oredo Local Government Council, Hon. Evbareke Jenkins Osunde has said that the best way to prevent Meningococcal disease is through vaccination.

Hon. Osunde stated this at the flag- off of the meningococcal a conjugate vaccine at Stella Obansanjo Hospital, Benin City, recently.

The Chairman who said that Meningitis which is caused by different pathogens is an inflammation and swelling of the membranes ( Meninges) that covers the brain and spinal cord averred that the disease can be fatal or cause serious lasting side effects, hence this exercise is aimed at fighting against or  completely eradicating the dreadful child disease through well planned routine immunization schedule.

Hon. Osunde said the exercise was the first of its kind in the Local Government and Edo State in general noting that the aim is to reach every child within the age bracket of nine months and fifteen months.

The Local Government Boss commended the State Government’s commitment towards the realisation of goals of all health related issues in the State and stressed that Oredo Local Government will leave no stone unturned to ensure that children are saved from preventable disability or untimely death.

While calling on parents and guardians to make their children and wards available for the vaccine, Hon. Osunde said that public health will continue to enjoy priority in his administration.

Earlier, the Director of Primary Healthcare of the Local Government, Dr. Marvelson Obasogie sensitised the women on the benefits of the vaccine and the deadliness of the disease.

He expressed satisfaction over the turnout of women who brought their children for the exercise stressing that the same exercise is being replicated in other local government areas of the state.

Highpoint of the ceremony was the introduction of the Meningococcal, a conjugate Vaccine to children who were around for the exercise.
