A powerful rainstorm tore through Iju/Itaogbolu community in Akure North on Sunday evening. Parts of the General Hospital collapsed while dozens of homes and businesses suffered severe damage.
Strong winds and heavy rainfall battered the area without warning. Residents scrambled for shelter as the storm swept across the town.
The hospital bore the brunt of the disaster. Sections of the building were torn open, exposing patients and staff to the elements.
Hospital authorities confirmed that solar panels powering the facility were completely destroyed. Its entire solar-powered lighting system was also damaged beyond immediate repair.
Medical equipment suffered significant losses in the attack. Healthcare services at the facility have now been severely disrupted.
Sources within the hospital explained the gravity of the situation. Diagnostic tests requiring electricity can no longer be performed without the solar power system.
Remarkably, the community recorded no deaths from the incident. However, material losses were extensive across the affected areas.
Residents have begun appealing to state and federal authorities for urgent assistance. They're seeking both relief materials and help rebuilding damaged infrastructure.
Mrs. Taiwo Oluyemi, one of the victims, spoke to reporters about the impact.
"This is a serious disaster for us," she noted.
According to her, the hospital's dependence on solar power makes this disaster particularly troubling. She stressed that healthcare delivery in the community will suffer significantly.
"We are appealing to the government and other well-meaning individuals to assist us," Oluyemi added.
Community leaders have called for immediate intervention from government agencies. They're asking for rapid restoration of critical infrastructure and comprehensive relief for those affected.
