The Olotu and Rowland Ekuogbe Akpodiete Foundation (OERAF) on April 8, 2025, held a memorial lecture focusing on conflict resolution and community safety in Nigeria, in honour of the late Chief Ekuogbe Rowland Akpodiete, Ph.D. Born on April 4, 1924, Chief Akpodiete was a respected community leader who served as the spokesperson (Otota) of the Ughelli Kingdom until his passing on April 9, 1995.
The event, which took place at the Ughelli Kingdom Hall, drew several prominent security experts, traditional leaders, and government officials.
In his opening remarks, the Executive Director of OERAF, SPY CSP Olotu Otemu Akpodiete, Ph.D. (JP), expressed the foundation’s commitment to community development and service. He described his late grandfather as a distinguished leader whose dedication to the Ughelli Kingdom inspired the memorial lecture. "As we remember him, we use this opportunity to further impact lives," he noted.
The guest speaker, Mr. Sylvester Obose, CSS, MNIIS, delivered an insightful presentation on the causes, dynamics, and management of conflict. He emphasized the importance of equipping community members with the knowledge to prevent and address conflicts effectively. "Safety and security in our communities must remain a top priority. By applying the strategies discussed today, we can all contribute to a safer society," he remarked.
Dr. Wilton T. Harry, MIS, CPP, DFCSI, FNIS, also addressed participants, highlighting that the security of lives and property is a shared responsibility. His session reinforced practical steps for community safety.
In addition to the lectures, OERAF registered several attendees into the Delta State Contributory Health Insurance Scheme, furthering its commitment to public welfare.
Among the dignitaries present were Olorogun Major Patrick A. Egone (Rtd), member of the Delta State Advisory Council; Chief Emmanuel Ogobene, also of the Delta State Advisory Council; Mr. Edwin Asima of LGSC, Ughelli North Local Government; Chief Mrs. Grace Akpodiete; Deaconess Florence Enughwure; and Barrister Agboka Akpodiete-Omale.
The event concluded with a raffle draw involving various communities and the Ughelli Kingdom VGN. Erhuwarien Community in Ughelli South LGA and Ekredjebo Community in Ughelli North LGA emerged winners of new security communication gadgets.
