OERA Foundation takes security education to schools in Delta

Following the increasing cases of insecurity in Nigeria particularly child kidnap, and in a bid to starve off abductors from schools, the Olotu & Ekuogbe Rowland Akpodiete Foundation has taken security education to government secondary schools in Delta State. 

 

The Executive Director of the Foundation, Dr. Olotu Akpodiete represented by the director of Operations, Deacon Ogaga Ohwojero  at the flag off of the security education programme tagged: “Security and safety Education Project” (SSEP), at Government College Ughelli,  said security education in schools had become very important as a result of recent security challenges.

 

According to him, “today, parents and guardians are worried about the protection and safety of their children in the face of terrorists attack, ethnic and communal clashes and kidnapping.

“This has tendency to create fear in the minds of students, teachers and parents and had, in many cases, resulted in the withdrawal of students from schools, hence this project was initiated by the Foundation,” he added.

 

The Executive Director, also emphasized that the safety of the school child was of primary concern to government and other stakeholders in the education sector, saying that is why the Foundation is willing to embrace and collaborate with any organization on how to address security challenges in our schools.

 

At the event, Mr. Slyvester Osaror, veteran security consultant trained over 50 participants including management of the school, teachers, students and security team of the school on school security and safety management, signs of terrorism, basic fire fighting techniques, role of security officers, mindset and tactical awareness, school disturbances, active shooter incident, surviving active shooter incident among others.

 

The Principal of Government College Ughelli, Mr. Edward Asibeluo expressed joy and satisfaction for the gesture by the Foundation especially the Executive Director who is an Old boy of the school for commencing the project first in Government College Ughelli, urged other secondary schools to partner with the Foundation.

 

At the end of the training Fire Extinguisher and Fire emergency devices were donated to the school by the Foundation.

 

Some of the participants that attended the training are Onojafe Ogheneyoma, Iteye Joseph, Linda Nkechi, Umudide Ogheneyole, Urhoma Lucky, Onogakpor Happy, Peter Ofogba, Mukoro Are, Obiuweubi Joel, Oghene Tega, Edesiri Victory, Akpedafe Bernard Edewor Joshua, and many others.
